PlateGate

... or Hand of God II?

Did you see the end of the Rockies-Padres end-of-the-season play-off game for the NL Wild Card? Unbelievable ending.

Top of the 13th, Padres score on a 2-run HR by former nobody Scott Hairston.

Bottom of the 13th, Padres bring in Trevor Hoffman, all-time closer. He proceeds to give back-to-back doubles to Matsui and Tulowitski. Then Holiday karooms a triple off the top of the RF Wall, eluding a leaping Brian Giles. That hit scores the tying run. At that point, things begin to go haywire:

  • After walking Helton, Hoffman gets Carroll to fly-out to Giles, who throws a looping strike to home plate...
  • Holiday slides in, but his hand is clearly blocked by Barrett
  • Barrett, unfortunately, drops the ball
  • As a result of the hand block, Holiday's face crashes into the ground, cutting up his face and mouth...
  • No immediate call from the home plate umpire...
  • Barrett then scrambles for the ball...
  • Holiday is looking at the umpire, clearly in pain, and slightly struggling to get to the plate...
  • Holiday gives up and begins rolling on the ground...
  • The ump then calls Holiday safe...
Bedlam ensues in Denver. Unbelievable.
