Bill Simmons pours salt into the open wounds of Packerland

From Bill Simmons "The Sports Guy":

Favre looked like the old Favre on Monday night. Warrants mentioning. Which raises another question ...

Why can't they trade him to a contender? Don't the Packers fans WANT him to finish his career on a good team? By the time the Packers are relevant again, Favre will be long gone ... so why not deal him to one of those "We could be good with the right QB" teams for a slew of young players and picks (assuming one of them has the cap space)? For instance, if Chicago traded Cedric Benson, next year's No. 1 and a future No. 2 for Favre right now ... from a pure football standpoint, which team would blanch before making that deal? Wouldn't the Bears immediately become a Super Bowl contender? Somebody needs to grease the skids on this one. Favre was too memorable to watch him end things like this. Even seeing DeNiro in "Hide and Seek" wasn't this depressing.

Bill, trust me when I say I am speaking for the entire Packer Nation: We do not want Favre to play with anyone other than the Packers, ever. And we want Favre to play QB for the Packers until he is confined to a wheelchair... well, at least maybe a Segway. And duuuuuuuuude, seriously, of all the teams, why would you suggest we trade them to the Bears? This just shows you know nothing

In a way, Simmons's comments are a compliment to Favre. It also shows how much of a fan he is of the man. However, it definitely shows how little he knows about being a fan of a team. Think about it Bill, would you have wanted the Red Sox to deal the Yaz? When what is happening in Packerland happens to the Patriots 3-5 years down the road (trust me: it is definitely on the horizon with your defense and lack of OL), should the Patriots deal Brady to the NY Jets? I mean, geez.

How loud can I write NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! on here to let Bill Simmons know that Packer fans want to squeeze every last moment out of Favre's career that we can.

...

But, to be completely honest, my brother James and I were talking about this exact hypothetical - it is only a hypothetical people!. I mean, can you imagine the kind of run a team like the Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders, or Baltimore Ravens could go on with Brett Favre at the helm? I mean, their is a sense of pride in knowing that the Packers are keeping these teams from reaching the Super Bowl by not dealing Favre.

UPDATE:

I do not want the Packers to ever trade Favre. I think he should be able to play at starting QB as long as he wants to. Let him play until he is 44 if he wants.
